Hertford Haulage Yard
Hertford
for McMullen & Sons Ltd
Completion 2009
This housing project is part of the redevelopment of the Hertford Riverside Yards, which aims to regenerate derelict industrial sites at the centre of the town.
Hertford Haulage Yard, until recently a parking lot, is within the Central Hertford conservation area and, being surrounded by listed buildings, is an especially sensitive site.
The development consists of six houses with gardens, some of which run down to the River Lea; it incorporates a new public route to the Dolphin Yard development across the river, which is reached by means of a new bascule footbridge (also designed by Acanthus LW Architects). The layout reproduces the characteristic tight-knit early medieval street pattern found in the centre of Hertford and responds to the nature of the early property divisions or burgage plots.
