Hounslow East Underground Station
Hounslow, London
for London Underground Ltd.
Completion 2004
Acanthus LW Architects' scheme design for a new station building at Hounslow East was won in competition against three other London Underground Framework architects.
The redevelopment of Hounslow East represented a unique opportunity for a virtually new station within the existing infrastructure. The scheme required the excavation of the existing embankment and provides a new ticket hall with ancillary accommodation, interchange passageway and stairs to each platform. Step free access for disabled passengers is achieved through the provision of a new lift to each platform.
The station utilises a timber diagrid roof with diagonal ribs supported on structural 'trees' rising from street level to provide canopy cover at platform level. The roof is clad in green patinated copper sheets, with transparent elevations onto the street, a light-wall to the bridge abutment and masonry construction as the building burrows into the embankment.
Phase 1 works, the westbound building - incorporating the ticket hall and ancillary accommodation, were completed in July 2002.
Phase 2, the eastbound building, was completed in Summer 2004.
